Women Are Instrumental In
Shaping Rave Culture
| 2022 | Insights, Contexts, Visual report
Exploring into the gender inequalities within UK rave culture, specifically investigating in the lack of female DJ representation
Concept:

Gathering insights, through primary and secondary research, to investigate why gender disparity lives within an industry that prides itself on the claim of being an industry for everyone and anyone; Presented within a visual report.
Key Insights:

A Male Dominated Industry:
Although female DJ's want to be noticed more within a male dominated line-up, from creating gender segregated events, i.e. female only line-ups, defeats equality altogether.

Tokenised:
Many female DJ's experience the feeling of being tokenised by promoters.

How I Dress Effects Your Perception:
Fashion has a large influence on how a female DJ is perceived by promoters and their audience. Female DJ's feel like they have to cover-up in order to be taken seriously and for people to focus on the music rather than their bodies.

Role Models:
Lack of female representation within the dance music industry has dramatically impacted young girls ambitions to DJ- how role models have a large influence on younger audiences.

Lack Of Conversation:
These conversations of female representation within the industry are commonly only being spoken about every year, during International Women's Day, with the rest of the year being dismissed.

Hidden Inequality:
Gender inequality is a hidden aspect within rave culture, with many successful female DJ's still facing a large gender pay gap, compared to their male competitors.
